A guide to Agios Prokopios, Naxos

Plan your visit to Agios Prokopios, Naxos’ most popular beach. Discover the best things to do, where to eat and stay and all the essential information

UPDATED JULY 2025

The hues of Agios Prokopios almost force even the most seasoned of travellers into travel cliches - all those overused shades of azure and turquoise, the endless golden sands and rows of vibrant sunbeds - but Naxos’ most popular beach genuinely earns each and every one.

Agios Prokopios is your quintessential Mediterranean summer holiday destination kind of beach, filled with beach clubs, sunbeds, and water sports.

The beach feels endless — a wide sweep of golden sand and some of the most gorgeous turquoise water on Naxos (there we go again!).

This is the kind of beach you’ll want to settle into — sprawled out on a sunbed with a book in hand and cocktail nearby, breaking only for a dip every half hour.

Just beyond the sand you’ll find a laid-back town with no-frills tavernas, affordable accommodation, and plenty of beachside activities for those who prefer a bit more action.

In this guide to Agios Prokopios beach, we share the best things to do, where to stay, where to eat, how to get there, and plenty more essential travel information.

AGIOS PROKOPIOS BEACH

You’ll find Agios Prokopios around 10 minutes south of Naxos’ capital, Chora.

This south-western stretch of Naxian coastline is popular with tourists due to its array of stunning long white sandy beaches. Agios Prokopios is one of the largest of these stretches, and with views over to Paros Island, it’s also one of the most picturesque.

Agios Prokopios is one of those rare Mediterranean beaches that offers something for everyone: there are beach bars, bougie sunbeds and cocktails-aplenty for some, and endless stretches of sand for others wishing to eschew all comforts and enjoy a more relaxed day on their own terms (more on all of these options below).

It’s worth noting there are no public amenities on Prokopios beach, so if you’re in need of a toilet or shower you’ll either have to wait until you get back to your accommodation or stump up for one beach bars.

Parking is available in the large open area between the beach and the nearby salt flats, but it can get hectic in summer. Arrive early if you're driving, or head to the quieter western end of the beach.

Supplies-wise, you’ll find several small supermarkets just off the beach selling snacks, drinks, and beach gear. There’s a more substantial Spar located just outside of town on the way to Naxos Chora; great for stocking up if you’re staying in an apartment!

THINGS TO DO AT AGIOS PROKOPIOS BEACH

LAZE AT THE BEACH BARS, OR ON THE BEACH

Although Naxos’ best beach clubs are found on nearby Plaka Beach, Agios Prokopios still holds its own: the long, white-sand stretch is dotted with relaxed, boho-chic bars and restaurants, many offering sunbeds and cabanas right at the water’s edge. For now, at least, Mykonos pricing hasn’t quite made its way here — so a comfortable beach day is still (comparatively) affordable.

Our favourite beach bar on Agios Prokopios was Kahlua. With a boho-Mediterranean design and chilled tunes, it makes for a relaxed day by the sea. The menu offers classic beach fare - burgers, salads, sandwiches and burritos - alongside a range of smoothies, cocktails and beers (best enjoyed in that order).

The sunbeds and beach area are well maintained, and the staff are some of the friendliest around. Hire a set of beach beds (2 beds and 1 Umbrella - prices vary depending on which row and season) and enjoy the vibes.

Other beach bars in the area that are worth your time include:

  • Del Mar, an Italian restaurant-cum-bar serving Italian favourites such as pizza, pasta and tiramisu

  • Macao Beach Naxos for a South American-infused day on the Med,

  • Sensu, a chic new arrival for 2025 (more on this one below!)

If beach bars aren’t your thing, and you’d prefer to enjoy a stretch of sand without others around, the undeveloped western part of the beach is perfect for a flop-drop-float kind of day.

The calm shallow waters also make this area perfect for families with small kids too

GO DIVING OFF AGIOS PROKOPIOS

If you want to experience a different side of Naxos, head to Blue Fin Divers, a PADI 5-Star Resort located right on Agios Prokopios Beach.

Whether you're a total beginner or a seasoned diver, they offer a range of snorkelling and diving experiences to suit all.

There are guided snorkels that explore Naxos’ crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life.

For divers, there are more than 10 incredible dive sites around the island, including colourful reefs, historic shipwrecks, and even WWII wreckage, like the Beaufighter Plane wreck — a British WWII aircraft still largely intact, now transformed into a thriving artificial reef.

Courses start from €60, and snorkelling sessions from €25 (as of July 2025).

GO SWIMMING IN THE BLUEST WATERS

The waters off Agios Prokopios are likely to be some of the bluest blues you’ve ever seen in your life - so strikingly vivid you’ll want to drop everything and dive right in.

The beach stretches long with shallow waters, making it perfect for hours of floating, wading and swimming. We spent many mornings here and can confidently say it’s one of the best swimming spots on the island.

While it lacks the rocky reeks of nearby Plaka beach, you can still snorkel from the shore here and spot some aquatic life. Grab some snorkelling gear from any mini market in town.

One caveat: the Meltemi winds can make Agios Prokopios quite windy and sometimes uncomfortable, especially in late July and August. Check the forecast or ask a local before heading out.

WATCH A MOVIE AT THE OUTDOOR CINEMA

In the heart of Prokopios lies the Art Cafe, a local institution that puts on an Art Festival over the summer months. On top of live music and art, there’s a pop up outdoor cinema that (weather permitting) showcases a range of Hollywood favourites under the stars.

For €10, you get a drink, a snack and a seat to watch a movie, which, if you ask us, is ridiculous value. But value can’t be placed on the experience - there’s literally nothing as cool as watching a movie outdoors with the light summer breeze, and drink in hand.

Beyond the outdoor cinema, there is a variety of programs, including musical performances (mostly jazz and Greek) and art installations which may take your fancy.

WHERE TO EAT & DRINK AT AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Agios Prokopios is home to a large number of restaurants, with a range of really good traditional options, and some varied international fare including Italian.

Although Naxos is a foodie paradise, we found the food options here fell short of our expectations - far better options exist at close by Plaka beach. But for ease, affordable prices, and ambience, Prokopios is a good option for those staying in town.

Here are a few of our favourite options:

LEFTO’S SOUVLAKI & KEBAB HOUSE

Lefto’s was suggested to us by a friend and boy did it not disappoint. Lefto’s does perhaps our favourite gyros in all of the Cyclades (we had the halloumi and vegan options), with the ingredients super fresh, the halloumi moist, and the flavours exceptional. So much so, that we came here almost every day.

On top of that, it’s super affordable, and the staff are so friendly, making a real effort to smile and say hello each day.

GIANNOULIS TAVERNA

Another recommendation from our local friends, family-run Giannoulis is definitely the best taverna in Prokopios, and the lines out the front each night attest to that. Serving a range of traditional Naxian and Greek cuisine, the food here is tasty, although we did find better elsewhere on the island.

We suggest the Dakos salad, the mussel risotto, and a range of small bites including the fava spread, and zucchini balls. The complimentary ouzo and yoghurt & honey to finish our meal was a wonderful touch too (Greek hospitality is something we’ll never get over!).

DEL MAR

For a laid-back meal just steps from the sand, Del Mar is a solid choice. Located just off Agios Prokopios beach, it’s a summer favourite for no-frills Italian-Greek fare at reasonable prices.

If you go, we recommend sticking with the pasta, which is the star of the show here anyway. We had the spaghetti agio e olio and it was flavoursome and delicious. The pizza, on the other hand, didn’t quite hit the mark.

That said, the service is warm and welcoming, and the setting is relaxed, making it a lovely spot for a casual evening after the beach.

SENSU BEACH BAR

A newcomer to the Agios Prokopios dining scene (it opened in 2025), upmarket beachfront restaurant and bar Sensu celebrates Naxian ingredients and Cycladic flavours in laid-back luxury.

Enjoy a handcrafted cocktail and classic beach bites under their signature umbrellas, or head to the restaurant for fresh, locally sourced seafood and a crisp glass of wine - all served with a side of Naxian sunset and warm hospitality.

WHERE TO STAY NEAR AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Agios Prokopios is filled with accommodation options, from hotel rooms to self-contained apartments.

Pricing here tends to sit at the more affordable end of the scale, and while it’s not the most luxurious found on the island, if you’re after a cheap and cheerful stay with no frills (and prefer to spend your money on experiences instead), Agios Prokopios is a great base.

NAXIAN COLLECTION | Where we stayed - a classy, well-appointed four-star hotel with a private pool and epic views. Check prices and availability

AGIOS PROKOPIOS TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

HOW TO GET TO AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Agios Prokopios is super easy to get to, with a range of transport options making for a simple trip from Chora town, or Plaka Beach.

BY BUS

  • Take Line #1 from Naxos Chora; the journey takes ~20-30 minutes (depending on traffic). Services run every 30min in summer - get there early as it gets busy (and pushy)! See the Naxos bus timetable here

  • Tickets from Chora to Prokopios should cost ~€1.80 in (in 2025). Tickets need to be bought prior to boarding - find them at tourist markets throughout the Island.

BY CAR

  • If you have a car (though not necessary if you’re staying central), you’ll find plenty of parking at Agios Prokopios - particularly in the southeast

  • Search and book car rental on Naxos

BY SCOOTER / ATV

  • Again, there’s parking near Prokopios beach. There are plenty of places to rent scooters on Naxos, however, we recommend Naxos On the Road

  • Note that to rent a scooter in Greece you'll need to show proof of a motorbike license.

HOW LONG SHOULD YOU SPEND ON NAXOS?

Being the largest island in the Cyclades, there are many things to see and do on Naxos, so we recommend staying for five nights.

That might sound like a lot to those wanting to Island hop throughout the summer, but it’s cheaper than many other popular islands such as Santorini or Mykonos, so spending more time here will stretch your holiday dollars further.

THE BEST TIME TO VISIT AGIOS PROKOPIOS

Naxos is prone to the summer northern winds (meltemi), which can make the most popular parts of the island, including Agios Prokopios beach, extremely windy.

The Meltemi peaks around July and August and while it doesn’t detract from the beauty of Prokopios, it can make a day spent there quite uncomfortable. Think blowing sand, choppy waves, and constant wind blowing your hair every which way.

On top of the Meltemi winds, Agios Prokopios beach (and surrounds) gets super busy with tourists during this time - and prices also increase dramatically for things like food, drinks and sunbeds.

That’s why we suggest visiting Naxos during the shoulder seasons of late April - early June, and mid-September - October. The days are still long and the weather and sea are warm, but the crowds are smaller, prices more affordable, and environmental impact reduced, making the island far more enjoyable for everyone.
