Our travel highlight of 2015

So.. 2015 is complete. How did that happen? Miranda has been pondering the ability of a year to just whip by like that a lot lately. Recently, as we sat overlooking the Mekong River admiring yet another perfect sunset with Beerlao in hand, the topic came up again.

As I (Mark) finished my sip of beer, my response was to ask what Miranda's ‘travel highlight of 2015’ had been.

So there we sat, watching the colours streaking across the sky in awe and struggling hard to remember the year's adventures.

Where had we actually been and what had we actually done? We'd only had one Beerlao by this stage, but we really struggled to remember. I guess it’s fortunate we run a travel blog!

Looking back, we'd road tripped Tasmania, explored Melbourne and her surrounds, ventured to the Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula and Daylesford. And we had embarked on our current epic adventure; so, not a great amount of travel it would seem (saving for a life of travel has its downfall!).

Then we started the deliberation over what the travel highlight was out of these.

The country we were currently sitting in, Laos, has far exceeded all expectations and will remain a highlight of our trip regardless of outcome of our next 9 months of travel.

Our recent visit to Singapore, exploring the cosmopolitan city of many world class attractions and outrageously tasty street food had left us wanting more.

Tasmania, with her pristine wilderness and damn clean air, had us nature frothing for weeks after our return. The highlight overwhelmingly being Cradle Mountain National Park.

And then, there's Melbourne. We couldn’t have explored our wonderful home town any more than we did. But in the end, while being beautiful, interesting and ‘oh so awesome’... we got sick of her.

No, it wasn’t any of the above. Our travel highlight wasn’t even a trip we had taken.

In fact, we both concluded that our travel highlight of 2015 was actually the decision we made to follow our dreams and live a life of travel

Buying that one way ticket to Singapore in February set in motion something we had talked about doing for a long time and as we write this, we are actually living our dreams. We rode out the peaks and troughs in the preparation, saved like crazy, and finally found the courage to quit our normal lives and take to the road. Crazy right? This is just the start of our adventure and we are incredibly pumped for what 2016 holds. We can't wait to take you along for the ride.

So there you have it, our short but sweet travel highlight for 2015.

We want to hear what your travel highlight was for 2015! Share you story with us in the comments below.
